Knows many of earth's secrets While nodding in the wood."--Ray Laurence. Materials.--i. One trillium plant, root and all. 2. A blossoming stalk of trillium for each member of the class. 3. A small can of soil from the place in which the trillium grew. Observations.--1. Describe the trillium root just as it looks to you. Although you have taken but one root for your whole class, it will please Uncle John if you plant it after the lesson is over. Many people carelessly uproot wild flowers and after a while we no longer find the flowers in our woods. Junior Naturalists can do much to protect the spring blossoms. Take the stalk of trillium in your hand. Look at it carefully. How many colors do you find in leaf, stem and flower? Note the different parts of the flower. Are the parts arranged in twos, threes, or sixes? Draw a leaf of this plant, showing the veins. The trillium is sometimes called a wood-lily. In what way does it look like any lily you ever saw? What is the color of the soil in which the trillium grew? Compare it with the soil of your school-grounds. Write Uncle John telling him all you have learned from your lesson on the trillium.
